Frederick Homeowner's Tax Credit on Home Improvements
Increases in the tax credits for energy efficient home improvements were included in the recent economic stimulus package. The tax credit was increased from 10%of the cost of the improvement to up to 30%.
The old credit had a lifetime maximum of $500, but has been replaced by a max of $1,500. The improvements must be done between Dec. 31, 2008 and January 1, 2011, and only your principal residence counts.
The windows, doors, and skylights must have the right U-Factors (how well they prevent heat from escaping) and SHGC measure (how well they block heat from the sun). The NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) website will have the list of qualifying products. 
As well as windows, doors and skylights, the credit is available for insulation, certain roofing materials, heating systems, wather heaters, and certain efficient air conditioning. There are 30% credits for solar, wind and geothermal systems that have no dollar cap and are good on installations through December 31, 2016.
If you are planning to make improvements to your home in the future, make sure they are the best in green technologies. Consumer expectations are increasingly green-favorable, and you don't want to get behind the technology curve when it comes time to sell your home.
